SPACAL LOJZE
Spacal was a painter and graphic artist, born in 1907 in Trieste. In his work he was the poet of his homeland – karst and sea. As an artist of Slovenian nationality and Italian citizenship he was caught between two cultural worlds. He has exhibited both at home and abroad (Milan, Rome, Venice, Florence, Moscow, Leningrad, Prague, Warsaw, Belgrade, Zagreb). His works were baught by the Gallery of Contemporary Art in Rome and the Contemporary Art Gallery in Milan. They are also present in many private collections at home and abroad. He was invited to Quadriennale in Rome and to Bienalle in Venice. In Venice Bienalle he was introduced in 1948, 1954 and 1958, when he took one of the leading places in the Italian graphics. His public artistic activity began in 1937 with a group exhibition in Trieste. Three years later, he had at the same place the first solo exhibition. In 1974 he received the Preseren Award for his artistic work.
