The artist Peter Černe often used his small bronze sculptures as models for larger sculptural renditions in wood. The subject matter of these sculptures is often fantasy inspired, a synthesis of female, particularly vegetal and animal, forms, which are characteristic of his painted wood, ” baroque” sculptures. Of the traditional sculptural materials he was most fond of was fired clay- terracotta. Braids, tendrils, blossoms, buds and cacti grow luxuriously in the new medium, either as compositions in their own right or in the company of various containers, thus creating a new synthesis of diverse elements. Finally, we must particularly mention the humour which, in addition to colourfulness, often figures in the art of Peter Černe.
