He was born on September 20, 1956 in London, Ontario, Canada. The family, of Italian descent, returned to Italy in 1962 to the town of Arezzo, where the painter still lives today. The painter Lorenzo Donati is self-taught and works best with oil paint on canvas. He is one of the few who also deal with encaustic. He has participated in many solo and group exhibitions.
